Charlie Daniels Week
Written by Bruce Wall
Saturday, 02 August 2008

Recently, I had the rare opportunity of seeing Charlie Daniels twice in one week. Charlie was performing at the Grand Ole Opry on Tuesday night and again with the Volunteer Jam Tour on Friday. I had never been to the Grand Ole Opry. So, I was extremely thrilled when Charlie had his office set me up with passes to attend the show.

Charlie Daniels has always been one of my favorite artists. In the past two years I have gotten to meet and talk with him several times and he is truly one of the good ones. Charlie is deeply involved in several charities and causes. He is a man of great faith and patriotism. Needless to say, I am always thrilled when I get an opportunity to talk with him.

Growing up in the south, you were definitely exposed to the Grand Ole Opry. I was no exception. So, combining Charlie Daniels and the Grand Ole Opry was an opportunity I was not going to miss. From the moment you take your seat you are just overwhelmed with the sense of history. I sat there thinking to myself of all the legendary artists that had taken that stage. It was definitely going to be a great night of entertainment with acts like:

Pam Tillis, Cherryholmes, Jason Michael Carroll, Jewel, Lorrie Morgan, Darius Rucker, Bill Anderson and, of course, Charlie Daniels.

All the acts were fabulous. I was especially impressed with Darius Rucker of Hooty and the Blowfish fame. But, I was there to see the "Long Haired Country Boy" himself. He did not disappoint. He came ready to play, kicking off his set with "Wooley Swamp." His Opry rendition of the hit was note perfect. Next, he spoke of his great gratitude and admiration of our troops and then cited the pledge of allegiance. Charlie no sooner finished and the band was hard at the hit "In America." The audience just ate it up. But, what Charlie Daniels show would be complete without "The Devil Went Down To Georgia." Charlie drove his 3 song set home with his famous fiddle playing. I left the venue completely in awe of Charlie's showmanship and the production of the Grand Ole Opry. Both were the definition of perfection.
